Our Fabric

African fabric is rich in history and cultural significance, with diverse fabrics created using a variety of techniques such as weaving, dyeing, and embroidery.

At Iwe Nesu we mainly use Ankara and Shweshwe fabric.

Ankara fabric is known for its vibrant colours and bold, repeating patterns. Ankara fabric is perhaps the most globally recognized African textile. The cotton cloth is produced using a wax-resist dyeing technique (batik) that results in the same intensity of colour on both sides. Though the production technique has Indonesian and Dutch origins, the fabric was enthusiastically adopted in West Africa and is now a symbol of African identity.

Shweshwe often called the “denim of South Africa,” is a dyed and printed cotton fabric known for its intricate geometric patterns. Traditionally produced in indigo, it is now available in a range of colours and is a staple for special occasions and weddings in Southern Africa.
